4-H Saskatchewan Provincial Public Speaking was held on Saturday, April 20th in Melville, SK by the Melville Town N Country 4-H Club. This event hosted 32 of our best and brightest public speakers from across the province, presenting speeches on topics ranging from “Coffee”, “What It’s Like Being A Teenager” and “The Challenges of Becoming a Farmer.” After all the competitors showcased their public speaking skills, the winners in each age category are:
Cloverbud 1st Place – Mara Forden “Part Time Chore Girl” 2nd Place – Dawsyn Rissling “Up North” 3rd Place- “Reed Vandenhurk “I Love Lego” Honourable Mention- Ava Mackie “On The Road Again” Junior 1st Place- Kate Hougham “Something That’s Special to Me” 2nd Place- Luke Vandenhurk “Pheasant Hunting” 3rd Place- Darian Beattie “The Right Decision” Intermediate 1st Place- Hanna Hougham “Fake it Til You Make It” 2nd Place- Amy Fradette “Heidi Fradette 2.0” 3rd Place- Gage Goetz “Slingshot Racing” Senior 1st Place- Hunter Reid “The Pressure to Have it all Figured Out” 2nd Place- Ava Loveridge “Vertically Challenged” 3rd Place- Cailey Haus “Small Town Life” After the competition, a banquet was held with Loonie Draws supporting the Saskatchewan 4-H Foundation, Paw & Claws Rescue, and the Melville Food Bank, a 4-H Bingo with lots of prizes for participants, and a live auction. Greetings for the event were brought by Melville Mayor Walter Streelasky, Aubrey Eaton (Executive Director, 4-H Saskatchewan), Jessie Wozniak (previous Public Speaking winner), and Krystal Spray (4-H Saskatchewan Board of Directors). Scott Fitzsimmons was our guest speaker for the evening. Thank you to the Melville Town N Country 4-H Club for hosting this event! It takes a lot of time, effort, and creativity to plan and execute a provincial event. To the volunteers who donated their time- thank you so much for your dedication to the 4-H program. There were various teams from each region who were able to join in the bonspiel for a total of 15 teams; 7 Junior teams and 8 senior teams playing throughout the weekend with District #32 hosting.
The weekend started off Friday afternoon with the first draw taking place at 4pm. The banquet was held Saturday night, where all the teams were introduced. A grant total of around 190 curlers, family and friends attended the banquet and dance! Members had a great time getting to know one another during the curling and dance! Thank you to the District #32 Curling Committee for hosting an exceptional event. Along with 11 team chaperones (thanks to Stacey Hawkins and Crystal Murphy), participants enjoyed a tasty supper, with words from event sponsor Corteva Agriscience. Participants received an informative orientation, followed by guest speaker Quick Dick McDick. The competitors then judged a Scenario Class (minerals), Milk Composition and Steaks. Competitors gave written reasons on these three classes.
Monday morning, competitors were bussed to the Agribition grounds where they judged: Speckle Park Heifer Calves, Dairy, Heavy Horses, Charolais Bred Heifers, Hereford Bull calves and Texas longhorns. Throughout the afternoon, participants gave oral reasons to a variety of judges. Monday evening came to a close after an awards banquet with words from event sponsor, TD, and greetings from the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. David Marit. Awards were then presented, with the final placings being announced:
