Judging Competition

The 2010 Canadian National 4-H & Youth Judging Competition was held on November 21 ? 23, 2010 at the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina SK. Eight Saskatchewan 4-H delegates attended the event,
after having won at the Provincial 4-H Judging competition held this summer. 2010 marked the 35th Anniversary of this prestigious nation-wide event.

Alicia Sopatyk, Bevin Hamilton, Kelsey Paskell, Megan Rogers, Nathan Trowell, Rosalynn Meyer, Cougen Pegg and Brittany Jordet made our Saskatchewan team of eight.

The national event began on Sunday with a visit to John Deere Limited. Members took part in a fantastic supper, judging orientation session, John Deere information session, and tour of the John Deere Limited warehouse. Monday consisted of the 49 delegates from across Canada, and the  United Kingdom, judging the following classes: dairy heifer, milking cow, bred beef heifer, beef bull calves, market steer, market heifer, market hog barrows, breeding gilts, beef heifer, as well as two light horse classes. The afternoon consisted of delegates giving oral reasons about eight of these classes. Competitors then enjoyed an
afternoon of seeing the sights at Agribition, followed by the Ranch Rodeo, and swimming at the hotel.
Competitors, chaperones, sponsors, committee members and guests gathered on Tuesday morning for an Awards Breakfast, where competitors learned the final results of this respected competition.

The results were as follows:

  • 1st Place ($2,500 Scholarship): Lindsey Douglas, Alberta
  • 2nd Place ($1,250 John Deere Limited Scholarship): Brittany Jordet, Saskatchewan
  • 3rd Place ($750 John Deere Limited Scholarship): Morgan Ings, Maritimes
  • 4th Place (Cash Prize of $300): Megan Black, Maritimes
  • 5th Place (Cash Prize of $150): Bevin Hamilton, Saskatchewan
  • Team Award (highest score per top 4 members on a team): Alberta
  • Honourable Mention Team Award: Saskatchewan (only 8 points behind Alberta!)

Special thanks to: Janice Sopatyk for chaperoning our Saskatchewan team; John Deere Limited and TD Canada Trust Agriculture Services for sponsoring the event; Canadian Western Agribition for providing this incredible opportunity; and the Organizing Committee for their hard work and dedication to this event.

Congratulations to our Team of Eight for a job very well done!
